Bronze medals in the three-day team event followed in Mexico City in 1968 and Montreal in 1976. Barcelona 1992 saw Matt Ryan win the individual gold medal in the three-day event and combine with Andrew Hoy and Gillian Rolton to win the team competition. Safety procedures must be determined for the location (e.g. location of first aid support and equipment, roll marking, process to rapidly communicate emergency advice to adult supervisors of impending severe events). Reference to the Safe Work Australia—guide to managing risks when new and inexperienced persons interact with horses (PDF, 2.9MB) is required when planning this activity. This guideline relates to student participation in horse riding, including equestrian and trail riding, as an activity to support curriculum delivery. If we are equestrians, we all owe to our sport, our future riders, and ultimately our horses, to make sure that we continually strive for better – we need to make sure that we keep our precious social licence to operate.

Trail riding involves organised recreational horse-back riding that can be short (an hour) or long (multi-day) rides. It may occur in diverse environments where the participants are led as a group outside of enclosed areas in the natural environment. I am learning how the horse thinks and starting to understand how many, very common and ‘legitimate’ practices can cause significant conflict for our beautiful equines, who are built to be social, to graze and to run. You can easily see that her hips and shoulders aren’t level, her stirrup heights are uneven and her weight has shifted to the right. The French Jean Cariou won the first gold medal for Jumping but Sweden secured the team gold ahead of Germany and France.

How heavy should a horse rider be?

Deb Bennett, PhD, founder of the Equine Studies Institute and an expert in the biomechanics of horses, has advised that the “Total weight of rider plus tack must not exceed 250 lbs. It would spell the end of the Games for Raisner and put the sport under a renewed spotlight as it tries to justify its place in future Games, one of which will be in Brisbane in 2032. He believed it would test a man’s ‘moral qualities’ as well as his physical prowess. It was an attempt to simulate the experience of a soldier trapped behind enemy lines in the 19th century, part of which was the essential skill of being able to procure a horse to facilitate one’s return to friendly territory. We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians and Traditional Custodians of the lands where we live, learn, and work. “We probably should take a lot more care — normally I just take it easy for the next few days and go to the hospital if it’s really bad,” he said.

  • Unfortunately, riding a horse skilfully with a sore, stiff back, or a pelvis that feels like a twisted pretzel, is not easy, nor pretty, nor likely to win any dressage competitions (or jumping/x-country for that matter).
  • “We are looking forward to hearing directly from UIPM on any proposed changes to the competition format for the sport.
  • It’s now also recognised that an asymmetrical rider can contribute to back pain and lameness in the horse.
  • Equestrian has been part of the Olympic program since Stockholm 1912, when 62 competitors from ten nations with 70 horses were involved.

Furthermore, the Swede Axel Nordlander won both the individual and team Eventing gold and Germany took silver ahead of the United States. The equestrian sport was undoubtedly a success and it started to frequent the Olympic Games ever since. Four years later, in Paris the IOC extended the previous nine sports to 19 including equestrian events such as Jumping, High Jump, Long Jump, and Mail Coach.

The fences are designed so that if the horse hits them as they jump them, part or all of the fence will knock down and the rider will be penalised with ‘faults’. Faults are also awarded if the rider does not complete the course within a set time. If there is a tie, the result is decided by jumping a shortened course as fast as possible without knocking fences down. Australia won three consecutive gold medals in Team Eventing (Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 & Sydney 2000) which is the only time it has been achieved. Hoy was a part of all three teams making him the only other athlete at the time other than Dawn Fraser to achieve this milestone. A process for checking for damage for all equipment used in the activity must be established and employed (e.g. no cracks, splits or worn stitching on saddles/bridles, appropriately sized breakaway stirrup irons).
